Hamilton basketballer Kia Nurse first Canadian up for Nancy Lieberman award

The University of Connecticut Huskies were touted as the college team of the century, reaching a historic milestone that included a pair of NCAA National Championship titles.

Just two players appeared in every single game during that streak, and one of them was Hamilton’s own Kia Nurse.

She’s been announced as a finalist for a Basketball Hall of Fame award — the 2018 Nancy Lieberman award — which is given to the top point guard in the highest level of women’s college basketball. Nurse is the first Canadian to be nominated for the award.

“To be recognized at such a young age, I know she would take it as an honour.” said Denise Dignard, Basketball Canada’s Director of Women’s High Performance. “For a Canadian to get it would mean so much for all Canadians.”

Going beyond the collegiate level, Nurse also poured in 33 points as the youngest member of Team Canada on their way to a Gold Medal at the Pan Am Games right here in Toronto back in 2015.

Nurse, with her parent’s Richard and Cathy in tow, was celebrated ahead of her team’s final regular season game during ‘Senior Night’ at her college on Monday.

The winner of the award will be announced at the end of March.
