1 dead in basement apartment fire in Etobicoke

A 21-year-old woman died after a two-alarm fire in a basement apartment in Etobicoke.

Fire crews were called to Byng Avenue, near Albion Road, just after 2:30 a.m. on Thursday.

Deputy fire chief Jim Kay said three people were in the basement when the fire broke out.

The woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.

Fire crews rescued a 20-year-old man, who is being treated in hospital. A second male occupant escaped unharmed.

Four people who live in the upper section of the home all got out safely.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in.

Correction: A fire official previously said the other person being treated in hospital is a woman.
