Kellie Leitch has announced she is leaving federal politics.

In a statement released by her office Wednesday morning, Leitch said she will not be seeking re-election in the 2019 vote.

Leitch said it has been an honour to serve as a member of parliament for the last seven years, but she now wants to return to the work she did before politics, as an paediatric orthopaedic surgeon.

She says she wants to take care of kids at home and overseas and her next project will be in Ghana, with the group health volunteers overseas.

Leitch first grabbed a controversial spotlight in the 2015 vote when she called for a barbaric cultural practices tipline. She then ran for the party’s leadership and sparked even more criticism after she embraced Donald Trump style policies such as an immigration screening test.

Leitch didn’t give any political reasons for her planned departure, although after the losing the leadership race she has been given no major role in the Conservatives and she is one of several MPs facing a challenge for their nomination as a candidate.
