Brampton plaza ‘stick brawl’ video raises concerns about community safety

Is this Brampton plaza a gathering place for violent brawls?

According to a video that keeps resurfacing on social media sites as of last Sunday night, a plaza housing many popular fast food chains near McLaughlin Road and Steeles Avenue West is a hotbed of late night fight activity.

In the video taken on Sunday night, about 20 to 30 adults, appearing to be mostly males, are seen using large sticks and bats to physically assault each other. The people recording the video are heard speaking to each other, laughing and seemingly taken aback by the sheer magnitude of what is taking place.

Peel Police Constable Iryna Yashnyk says officers are investigating the incident. On Sunday, Peel police did confirm that no one was taken into custody and most people involved in the brawl only suffered minor injuries.

Yashnyk told CityNews that police “spoke with a male victim, a 19-year-old who sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident… He was transported to a local hospital and treated for his injuries and later released. We are speaking with witnesses. We are also aware of video footage of the incident.  We’re working on identifying the parties involved.”

Police confirmed that those involved were “largely of South Asian” descent.  Several CityNews viewers emailed us to say that those involved in the fight were international students from Sheridan College’s Davis Campus – across the way from the plaza, however Constable Yashnyk said there is no evidence that the people involved were students from Sheridan College.

CityNews has reached out to Sheridan College but school officials say they have not been able to identify any of the individuals involved as students of the school. The college says it’s communicating with police on the investigation.
