Massive fire destroys half of Burlington meat processing facility

A massive fire has destroyed part of a meat processing facility near the QEW and Appleby Line in Burlington.

Black smoke and bright flames could be seen shooting out of the massive three-alarm industrial fire at the Paletta International Corporation building just after 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

Burlington Fire Chief David Lazenby said approximately 50 per cent of the building has been impacted by the fire.

“The fire was significant. It’s taken us a couple of hours to get on top of it and get it under control, just because of the scale of the incident,” said Lazenby, who added that additional fire trucks from Oakville and Hamilton were called in to help fight the blaze.

“Part of the building did collapse in on itself, a couple hours into the fire.”

Halton police say there are no injuries to report and residents in the area were advised to close their windows due to gusting winds which were blowing dark smoke across most of the region.

A cause of the blaze has not yet been determined but Lazenby says it started on the east side of the building.

“The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office will be attending tomorrow to proceed with the investigation, but I think it will be quite some time before we’re able to establish what happened.”
