Security guard dies after interaction at downtown apartment building

By News Staff

A security guard has died after an interaction with a man in the St. James Town area.

Police say they were called to the area of Parliament and Wellesley streets around 3 p.m. Wednesday, where they found a man without vital signs.

Moments before the medical call, witnesses say the suspect stole a jug of milk from a nearby store. When the owner attempted to pursue him, he was beaten back with the milk jug.

The suspect then ran to a building on Wellesley. Witnesses say a security guard confronted the suspect, who had previously lived in the building but had been evicted some time ago. Police say the 61-year-old guard suffered a cardiac arrest during the confrontation and was rushed to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say there did not appear to be any physical contact between the suspect and the security guard.

The suspect was taken into custody but was later released without charges.
