Smog advisory issued, heat warning remains in effect for Toronto, GTA

Environment Canada has issued a smog advisory for Toronto and the GTA on Sunday, along with a heat warning that remains in effect since Friday.

Temperatures are expected to reach the low 30’s, with humidex values approaching 40.

The hot and humid conditions are creating higher levels of pollution and air quality may deteriorate further, prompting a special air quality statement.

The agency said temperatures and humidity are expected to increase this weekend and into early next week under continued sunny skies. Thereafter some respite can be expected, with a cold front moving through southern Ontario on Wednesday. Cooler temperatures are expected for the rest of the week.

Last week, the City of Toronto announced that it would be turning the water back on at most of its nearly 100 splash pads.

“We have decided to reprioritize work and delay closure due to the unseasonably warm temperatures,” Matthew Cutler, a spokesman for Parks, Forestry and Recreation, told CityNews in an email.

Poor air quality may lead to increased coughing, headaches or shortness of breath. Environment Canada is advising the public to reschedule strenuous outdoor activity till the special air quality statement is lifted.

Further, it’s reminding people to schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day and and to seek cool places such as shady areas, swimming pools, and air-conditioned buildings. It also adds an important reminder not to leave children or pets inside parked cars.

Children, pregnant women, seniors, people with chronic illnesses or heart and breathing problems as well as those working or exercising outside are at greater risk in these conditions.

Seven cooling stations have been opened in the GTA, offering an air-conditioned place to rest and have a cool drink and snack. Cots are also provided for those who feel ill from the heat.
