Man critically injured in Hwy. 401 crash in Whitby

A man is in critical condition after a crash on Highway 401 in Whitby late Friday night.
It happened around 11:30 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of the highway near Lake Ridge Road.
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a pickup truck slammed into the back of a transport truck which had slowed to a stop due to construction.
The passenger side of the pickup ended up under the trailer and the driver was trapped.
Crews extricated him and took him to a local hospital at first. He was then airlifted to a trauma centre in Toronto with life-threatening injuries.
He was the only one in the pickup when the crash happened. Police have no information on his age or where he lives.
The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
The highway was closed for almost five hours for the investigation.
