OPSEU sets Sept. 14 strike vote for Ontario college teachers, instructors

By Mark Douglas

College teachers and other faculty at Ontario’s 24 colleges will hold a strike vote on Sept. 14.

JP Hornick is chair of the Colleges Academic Bargaining Team for OPSEU, and confirms the date to 570 NEWS.

Today is the last scheduled day of talks before the start of the school year, and Hornick says the one thing OPSEU and college management can agree on is that they have two diferent visions of how the college system should work.

Hornick says the most recent counter-proposal from management was essentially the same as their first offer, with changes to language around equal pay.

She says for the union, wages and benefits are not top priorities in negotiations this time around.

The key issue is faculty getting input on how colleges should be run, for things like student evaluations.

These talks cover about 13,000 professors, instructors, counsellors, and librarians.

More talks are scheduled for September after the start of classes.

The current contract for faculty expires Sept. 30.
