New police website breaks down Toronto crime, traffic stats by neighbourhood

By News Staff

How safe is your neighbourhood?

A new website, launched by Toronto police on Wednesday, gives unprecedented access to crime and traffic stats — including everything from break-ins to serious assaults to motorcycle crashes — that don’t always make the news.

The tool grew out of a task force recommendation on how to modernize Toronto’s police force and how it collects data on all reported crimes and traffic incidents. The app allows users to search by neighbourhood, category and date.

“The Public Safety Data Portal is designed to help reinforce the Toronto Police Service’s principles of being actively accountable, establishing trust in the community and enhancing collaborations channels with the public and partner agencies to address community safety challenges,” Business Intelligence & Analytics Manager Ian Williams said in a release.

“The public will be able to analyze data through interactive dashboards, mapping applications and even download raw datasets for their own analysis.”

The first phase of the project includes major crime (excluding sexual assaults) and homicide stats from 2004 to present. Traffic collision data will be released soon.
