Man who did not disclose HIV status faces additional charges, more victims feared

By News Staff

Police have laid additional charges and are concerned there may be more victims in the case of a 27-year-old Toronto man who allegedly failed to tell his sexual partners he had HIV.

In June, 27-year-old Ala Al Safi was arrested and charged with aggravated sexual assault.

The charges stemmed from intimate encounters with two partners, one in July 2011 and the other in December 2016.

On both occasions, Safi allegedly failed to disclose he had HIV, which was diagnosed in February 2011. As a result, both victims were subsequently diagnosed with HIV.

Investigators say eight other victims have now come forward.

Safi, who also goes by Ala El Deen and Ala Mode, allegedly had intimate relations with eight men ranging in age from 18 to 28 between December 2011 and March 2017. In all the cases, he allegedly did not disclose his HIV status.

On Thursday, Safi was charged with an additional eight charges of aggravated assault. He was expected to court on Friday.
