Brother of Toronto police officer also charged with assaulting 19-year-old

The brother of a Toronto police officer accused of assaulting a 19-year-old man in Whitby last year is also facing charges in connection with the incident, CityNews has learned.

Earlier this week, the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Const. Michael Theriault was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and public mischief. He has been suspended with pay.

On Friday, the SIU charged Christian Theriault with the same offences. CityNews has learned the two men are brothers.

“The allegation in this case is that Const. Michael Theriault and Christian Theriault acted together and were parties to the same assault upon the 19-year-old man,” SIU director Tony Loparco said in a statement.

The alleged incident happened on Dec. 28, 2016, in Whitby.

The SIU said the off-duty officer and his brother were involved in an interaction with Dafonte Miller near Thickson Road and William Stephenson Drive.

The teen was walking with two friends when two men confronted them. Miller and his friends fled, but Miller was allegedly hit and suffered serious injuries.

Durham regional police arrived and arrested the man, and took him to hospital with serious injuries.

Const. Theriault is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 10.

The SIU is an arms-length organization that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
