Children’s Aid Society changes rules after driver picks up wrong boy

By News Staff

The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of Toronto has changed its procedure for picking up children from schools, appointments and caregivers’ homes after a driver pulled the wrong boy out of class last week.

On May 2, the volunteer driver arrived at the office of Walter Perry Public School in Scarborough – which was being manned by students – and asked for the child he was looking for using a first name only.

Two children at the school have the same first name, and someone at the school chose the wrong one.

The six-year-old boy realized something was wrong, but the driver took him anyway. The child was out of school for almost three hours.

The Toronto District School Board called it “a horrible case of mistaken identity.”

The CAS reviewed its protocol and now requires its drivers to make sure an adult is present when picking up a child. The driver must also verify the child’s first and last name with either the child or an adult school official, therapist or adult caregiver.
