Buses replace streetcars on Queen Street all summer

With Toronto’s construction season upon us and numerous road works projects underway, can TTC diversions be far behind?

But this time around, the transit provider is taking greater steps to alleviate some commuter woes along the Queen Street corridor.

Starting May 7, streetcars on the 501 Queen route will be replaced entirely by buses.

Several projects including the installation of a new pedestrian bridge at the Eaton Centre west of Yonge Street and ongoing major road and track work west of Roncesvalles Avenue would require streetcars to divert around the areas.

The TTC says running buses along the entire route will help avoid the confusion and inconvenience that are the usual hallmarks of streetcar diversions.

To maintain passenger capacity, 65 buses will run on the route during the busiest times of the day.

Streetcars will return to Queen street on September 3rd, but additional short term diversions will still be needed to accommodate a few more TTC projects.

Occasional disruptions on the route can be expected up until November for:

  • Track reconstruction at Queen Street and Coxwell Avenue between September 3 and October 14.
  • Track reconstruction at Queen Street and McCaul Street between October 15 and November 25.

The TTC says these projects cannot be completed during the summer alongside the others affecting service on Queen street. This is partly because some works like water main replacement cannot be done simultaneously in the same locations. Buses will service the parts of the route that streetcars must divert around.
