Jodie Emery opens pot shop near Parliament Hill

A popular pot activist has opened a marijuana dispensary shop not far from Parliament Hill.

The new pot shop, which is located on Bank Street, about a 15 minute walk from the House of Commons, is the latest effort from activist Jodie Emery to push the government to end the arrests of dispensary operators across the country.

“Every day, Canadians are being arrested for marijuana – even simple possession. When that happens they can lose their job, their right to travel, scholarships, their home, their kids. There are enormous repercussions,” Emery said Wednesday.

Emery, along with about a dozen other advocates, held a protest on Parliament Hill on Wednesday about the country’s drug laws. Emery, who along with her husband Marc Emery owns the Cannabis Culture brand, argued that if the drug will soon be legal, there is no need for these arrests.

But health minister Jane Philpott said until the law has changed, the rules need to be followed.

“It would be beneficial for all Canadians to make sure that cannabis is legalized, regulated and that we restrict access for a number of public health reasons,” she explained.

Legislation to legalize marijuana is expected in the spring.
