A 19-year-old is in custody facing arson charges after a fire at Percy W. Merry Public School in Milton.

Halton Regional Police were called to the abandoned building on Britannia Road west of Trafalgar shortly after 6 p.m. on Thursday night. Over 40 Milton fire fighters were on the scene of the blaze.

“The fire itself is a fairly significant fire, this building will be a total loss,” said Milton Fire Chief Brian Ellsworth.

Investigators are still trying to determine what exactly caused the blaze that ultimately destroyed the building.

“The fire is currently under investigation, it’s a suspicious fire, and there is currently one in custody,” said Sergeant Tom Reilly of Halton Regional Police.

Ali-Miguel Kavanaght Larde is charged with break-and-enter, arson, and possession of a controlled substance. He is in custody pending a bail hearing.
