Helping the homeless: Winter survival kits being handed out across GTA

By News staff

Members of the community came together on Saturday to pack and hand out 3,000 winter survival kits for the homeless across the GTA.

Earlier in the day, more than 168 residents and corporate volunteers in the GTA, along with Toronto police, gathered at The Bargains Group in North York for the 17th annual Project Winter Survival program.

The survival kits, which contain sleeping bags, clothing, food, health care items and other necessities, will then be distributed to more than 150 homeless shelters and outreach programs in the GTA.

“The growing plight of our city’s homeless goes from critical to deadly during the volatile winter season,” Jody Steinhauer, founder of Project Winter Survival founder, said in a release.

“No one should die from the cold or the effects of life on the streets in the winter months.”

The project, which is organized by the Engage in Change Charity, has been running since 1999. Since then, more than 23,000 winter survival kits have been given out.

Steinhauer acknowledges that the kits are a temporary fix, and that more needs to be done to help the homeless.
