Storm disaster declared on Greek island of Skopelos, where ABBA movie ‘Mamma Mia!’ was filmed

ATHENS, Greece – Authorities in Greece have declared a state of emergency following torrential rain on the island of Skopelos, where the 2008 movie “Mamma Mia!” was filmed.

The emergency rating issued Thursday came after hours of rain caused power outages, extensive road damage and swept cars away in floods. Schools on the island were closed and dozens of homes suffered flood damage, but no serious injuries were reported.

The Greek Defence Ministry sent earthmoving equipment to Skopelos, an Aegean Sea holiday destination in the Sporades island group.

The island became widely known due to the movie starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan, which was based on a Broadway musical featuring hit songs from Swedish pop group ABBA.
