Gap to close 175 stores, mostly in North America

Gap Inc. is planning to close 175 of its namesake stores as tries to strengthen the struggling brand.

In the ’90s, The Gap was the go-to for generations of khaki pants-wearers, but the brand has struggled in recent years as it’s failed to keep up with the right design trends.

Most of the closures will happen in North America.

The company, which is based out of San Francisco, has 249 locations in Canada under various banners, although it’s not clear what specific stores will be affected.

However, the closures will not include Gap Factory or Gap Outlet locations.

The Gap doesn’t expect the move to effect its other brands —Old Navy and Banana Republic.
