Delays expected as Hwy. 400 ramp to Hwy. 401 closed until December

Drivers can expect huge delays over the next few months due to a construction closure in Toronto’s northwest end.

Starting on Wednesday, the southbound Highway 400 ramp to the eastbound Highway 401 will be narrowed from two lanes to a single lane for structural rehabilitation of the ramp.

The work is expected to last until the end of December.

According to Ministry of Transportation (MTO), one of the two lanes will be closed until around July, and then construction will move into the second lane. One lane will be open during the construction.

The closure is anticipated to have a big impact on traffic, so much so that the MTO said it would be installing extra “portable variable message signs” on the 400 near Rutherford Road and another at Finch Avenue, to give drivers real-time travel information.

That way, motorists can divert to highways 407 and 7, or onto Finch if they want.

680 NEWS airborne traffic reporter Darryl Dahmer said 35,000 vehicles use the southbound 400 ramp to the eastbound 401 on a normal weekday.
