Start of spring will be cooler than normal: Environment Canada

Thursday marks the last day of winter, and it has some Torontonians jumping for joy and dreaming of warmer days and nights.

Spring officially arrives on Friday at 6:45 p.m. EDT.

“Sick of the cold and I want to get my shorts back on,” one man said.

“The sun, the smile on people’s faces,” another person said.

But, is Old Man Winter willing to loosen his icy grip? Well, it’s probably best not to put away those snow brushes and shovels just yet.

“We’ve never had a spring without snow in the Toronto area,” Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips said.

Phillips said the region still has to get rid of the coldness of winter — There is still lots of ice, and the ground is frozen.

“And then when there’s any heat leftover, well, that will warm the air and soften the ground, and things will be nice. We’re really not at that stage yet,” he said.

Phillips said the rest of March and most of April will be cooler than normal.

“Our models are showing for the next little while — the last 10 days of March, April — we’re saying it’s going to be a little cooler than normal,” Phillips said.

“But spring doesn’t look like it’s going to be one of those ones that is a balmy one. It’s going to be more winter-like.”

However, things look to be heating up at the end of April and the beginning of May.
