Some homes flooded after at least 4 water mains break across Toronto

It was a soggy awakening for some homeowner across the city today after at least four leaks sprang Wednesday morning as water mains buckled and broke.

In Etobicoke, traffic and TTC buses are being diverted around Kipling Avenue and The Westway after a water main broke and flooded the road just before 5 a.m.

On Old Orchard Grove, near Avenue Road just south of Highway 401, a broken water main flooded homes and damaged cars. The leak was running for about three-and-a-half hours.

One resident complained about what he called a lackluster response from the city.

“It’s really a very sad tale that in the city of Toronto you have one man out here and that’s all they can do,” John Perlus said.

“My home is going to get washed away here. This house now is probably waist-deep in water in the basement and the garage is totally flooded.”

On nearby Bathurst Street, a water main broke just north of Eglinton Avenue at Briar Hill Avenue. It’s not yet known if any homes were flooded in this case.

And in an industrial area on Eddystone Avenue, near Jane Street of Finch Avenue West, a burst water main leaked into the streets.

Toronto gets on average about 1,100 water main breaks each year, resulting from the mechanical or structural failure of its underground pipes.
