Extreme cold weather alert issued for Toronto, 2nd one this week

An extreme cold weather alert has been issued for the city on Friday, as forecast temperatures and wind chills are expected to plummet throughout the day.

The alert, which was issued by the city’s medical officer of health Dr. David McKeown, will be in effect until further notice.

Extra services are available to the homeless during extreme cold weather alerts, including two 24-hour drop-ins and extra shelter beds.

Street outreach is also increased and TTC tokens are also made available for people to get to shelters.

The city issues the alert when temperatures are set to reach -15 C or colder according to Environment Canada’s forecast.

A high of -2 C was already reached on Friday morning, with the temperature falling to -10 C by the afternoon, 680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said. The low will be near -16 C on Friday night with the wind chill near -25.

This is the second extreme cold weather alert this week. The first was issued on Monday, and extended on Tuesday and Wednesday, but was lifted on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Mayor John Tory plans on turning motel rooms into shelter spaces, with at least 90 spaces to open as early as next week.

Four homeless men died in just over a week, three of them due to the frigid weather.

A report on the city’s homeless shelter system is expected in a few weeks.
