2nd GTA deep freeze causes transit and traffic issues

Burst underground pipes and frozen transit signals made for a frustrating commute on Tuesday morning as frigid temperatures gripped the GTA for a second time in about a week.

At Old Cummer GO Station in North York, a burst water main covered Leslie Street in ice, closing access to the parking lot and diverting TTC buses.

Trains were still stopping at the station and pedestrians had access, though spokesperson Anne Marie Aiken warned GO passengers to be cautious on the ice.

Police closed Leslie Street from Finch Avenue East to Clansman Boulevard.

The 51 Leslie bus is being diverted both ways via Finch, Don Mills and McNicoll.

Temperatures are expected to warm up to -11 C on Tuesday afternoon with mainly sunny skies.

But Toronto officials extended an extreme cold weather alert issued on Monday with temperatures hovering near -29 with the wind chill on Tuesday morning.

Wind chill values across the GTA are near -30, prompting Environment Canada to place many areas, including Oakville, Mississauga, Brampton and Durham under an extreme cold warning.

The national weather forecaster warns the extreme cold can put people at risk for hypothermia and frost bite.
