Vigil held in Vaughan for children killed by Taliban

A vigil was held Thursday evening in Vaughan for the many school children and staff killed by the Taliban during an attack at their military-run school in Peshawar earlier this week.

The candlelight vigil was hosted by the consul general of Pakistan, Asghar Ali Golo, who was joined by many community leaders and residents of all faiths.

Most of the 145 victims killed in Tuesday’s attack were children between the ages of 12 and 16.

Vigil organizer Ali Nawab, said, “All they were doing was going to school and getting an education. The Taliban are against education and they wouldn’t even spare innocent children.”

“We want to stand up and demonstrate our solidarity to the families of those who died and make a statement that education can’t be bogged down regardless of how many people are killed,” he said.

Those who attended the vigil also signed messages on a mural, which will be displayed at the public school where the atrocities occurred to encourage the survivors not to be afraid.

“This is our way of lending our hand,” Mila Medadian told CityNews.
