Boy charged with abduction after mother, baby attacked in Guildwood

A young mother is shaken up after she and her baby girl were allegedly assaulted by two young people while walking home from the GO Station.

The woman, 29, was walking home from Guildwood GO Station around 11 p.m. on Thursday when she was approached by a boy, 14, and girl, 12.

The youths allegedly demanded to take the woman’s 21-month-old baby, along with cash, valuables and her phone.

The suspects are alleged to have punched, kicked and knocked the woman to the ground. Insp. Art Little said the attackers at one point had the baby before the mother got it back.

The boy and girl apparently threatened to harm the baby before they ran off with the woman’s backpack.

The suspects are also accused of robbing another woman of her purse earlier in the evening at Markham and Ellesmere roads.

Police quickly took the girl into custody, but the boy fled, leading officers on a foot chase through backyards. He was arrested a few hours later in the same area where the alleged incident occurred.

Though the young age of the suspects is shocking to some, Little said the crime is shocking regardless of their age.

“This is a very alarming situation if we’re having the effort to abduct a child,” Little said at a news conference on Friday afternoon. “No robbery or criminal offence is acceptable but this offence … the fact that it was committed by a 12 and 14 is a major cause for concern.”

The baby girl suffered some bruises in the altercation.

Both mother and child were sent to hospital to be checked out but have since been released.

The suspects appeared in court on Friday morning facing multiple charges and investigators have ordered a psychiatric evaluation of the suspects.

The 14-year-old boy faces 10 charges, including robbery, abduction, assault and uttering threats.

Children’s Aid is also involved in an ongoing basis.

“Although accused of violent criminal acts, they need help,” Little said.
