Hockey legend Jean Béliveau dead at 83

Montreal Canadiens legend Jean Béliveau has died at the age of 83.

The organization confirmed his death on Twitter saying “It is with a great deal of sadness that the Canadiens organization learned tonight the passing of Jean Béliveau.”

A supremely skilled centre for 18 seasons, Beliveau was also a gracious spokesman for the Habs and the sport.

He scored 507 goals, won 10 Stanley Cups and was captain for 10 seasons before his retirement in 1971. He then moved seamlessly into an executive position with the club where he was part of another seven Cup wins.

There has been no word on the cause of death.

Béliveau was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1972.
