Insider Club member’s $17K weather guarantee win to help children’s education

With just one month until Christmas Day, one lucky member of the 680News Insider Club will have a brighter holiday season.

680News gave away the $17,000 jackpot in the weather guarantee contest on Tuesday morning after Monday’s high soared four degrees over what was forecast.

The winner, Ida Wong, said most of the money will go to help with her children’s education.

“You don’t know how blessed I am right now. We are just waiting for that money to be able to pay my kids to go to university,” Wong said.

Wong said she was driving and heard we missed the weather guarantee, and thought about how much it would help to win.

The forecast called for a high of 14 C on Monday; however, at around 12:05 p.m., the temperature hit 18 C at Pearson International Airport, beating the old record of 15 C set in 1946. It eventually hit 18.3 C.

“We had the showers yesterday, but a lot of that shower activity missed the reporting station at Pearson Airport, and of course, that’s where the official high comes from for the day, for our weather guarantee contest,” 680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said.

“Showers tend to have a cooling effect on the atmosphere and if we got the showers over Pearson Airport, it would have kept our high to about 14 C [or] 15 C, but those southwest winds really pushed our temperature well past our guaranteed high yesterday of 14 C.”

Cornwall reported a summer-like high of 21 C, topping the previous record of 20.5 C set in 2003.
