Police website aims to reunite stolen items with owners

Victims of a nine-month theft ring that operated across the GTA may actually get their property back.

Toronto police have launched a website specifically for the thousands of items recovered from Project Yellowbird, which led to arrests of nine suspects last August. The investigation focused on break-ins in 22, 32 and 53 divisions which include Etobicoke, mid-town Toronto and North York. Police raids were also carried out in York Region and Niagara on Aug. 28.

“We have over 4,000 photos of pieces of property. There’s no way we could actually display this so we created this website. What we’re asking is for the owners, the victims, to take a look and view it at their own time and leisure,” Det. David Zajac said.

The items recovered include expensive jewellery, women’s purses, laptops, cameras, silverware, statues and even a 150-year-old bible. Twenty-three vehicles have also been recovered and given back to their owners or their insurance companies. A dozen other vehicles were stolen and shipped overseas.

The break-ins happened between December 2013 and August 2014.
