Police ID woman found dead in barricaded Burlington apartment

Halton regional police have identified the woman found dead inside an apartment in Burlington earlier this week.

The body of Elizabeth Nugent, 32, was found on Monday after police forced entry into the apartment on Pearl Street, at James Street, after a man barricaded himself inside.

Police were called to the scene around 10 a.m. for a verbal altercation. When they arrived, they were confronted by a man who said he was armed with a gun.

After negotiations with the man, tactical officers forced their way into the residence around 2 p.m. and arrested the suspect. Officers also found the Nugent’s body inside.

Police continue to investigate the cause of death.

Police said the man and the victim were “involved in an intimate relationship.”

Malcolm Copeland, 41, of Markham has been charged with second-degree murder. He appeared in court on Tuesday, and will make another court appearance at a Milton courthouse on Thursday.
