Chow takes aim at Tory’s political past

Some fireworks on the campaign trail as Olivia Chow came out swinging against rival John Tory.

During a press conference Sunday morning, Chow took aim at Tory’s political track record, pointing out that while he was leader of the provincial Conservatives, he proposed to move 5,000 jobs out of Toronto.

“Here’s a candidate that not that long said that he would ship thousands of jobs to smaller communities outside the city,” she said. “Why? Why does he want to hurt Toronto?”

Tory, who has been leading in recent polls, stated that his previous provincial position required different responsibilities.

“She is focusing on something I said seven years ago when I was a provincial politician with a different responsibility,” he explained. “But during that time I had lots of positive things to say championing Toronto.”

Tory added that bringing jobs to Toronto was one of his top priorities.

“I am going to bring more jobs to Toronto than Ms. Chow could ever think about bringing here,” he said.

Chow and Tory both spent the afternoon taking in the Word on the Street festival meeting voters ahead of the Oct. 27 election.

When asked why she hasn’t said much about Doug Ford, who entered the race after Rob dropped out due to his health, she simply said there wasn’t much to say yet.

“Mr. Doug Ford hasn’t revealed a platform yet,” she explained. “I do note that, and I’ve said it several times, his voting record has been pretty terrible.”

Since entering the race, there haven’t been any events all three of the leading current mayoral candidates have attended together.

However, competition expected to heat up Tuesday when all candidates will be debating for the first time.

That debate will be broadcast live on CityNews and CityNews.ca.
