Olivia Chow receives 4 major councillor endorsements

Toronto mayoral candidate Olivia Chow has received a major round of endorsements from councillors at city hall.

Four of the more left-leaning city councillors stood behind Chow at a press conference in the Junction on Tuesday morning to show their support for her campaign to be mayor.

The endorsements came from councillors Sarah Doucette, Gord Perks Joe Mihevc and Chow’s stepson, Mike Layton.

She also got the nod from three others. Former NDP candidate Joe Cressy is running in Ward 20 Trinity-Spadina. Cressy had run against Adam Vaughan in the riding of Trinity-Spadina after Chow left her MP seat to run for mayor. Ausma Malik is running as a school trustee in Ward 9 and Marit Stiles is running as a school trustee in Ward 10.

Chow took a lot of questions on her main rival in the election, John Tory, who cancelled his participation at three of this week’s debates.

“Mr. Tory is starting to run away from people. Mr. Tory ran away from answering questions from students. He ran away from TTC riders,” Chow said.

She was more forgiving of mayoral candidate Doug Ford, who has missed every debate opportunity since entering the race.

“I’m willing to cut him some slack since his brother is really sick,” Chow said, referring to Mayor Rob Ford’s diagnosis of a tumour in his abdomen.

Chow promises that more council endorsements are coming in the near future.
