Twitter users share stories of domestic violence with #WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft

A shocking video of football player Ray Rice attacking his then-fiancee Janay Palmer in an elevator has spurred a larger discussion about domestic violence.

In the aftermath of the video going public Rice was suspended from his role with the Baltimore Ravens.

In an Instagram post Palmer, who took Rice’s name after they were married, lashed out at the media, the public, and the NFL for what she described as prying into their personal lives.

“To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his a** of for all his life just to gain ratings is horrific. THIS IS OUR LIFE!,” wrote Rice.

Her reaction, and decision to wed Rice after the attack, has led some to question why she would stay in the relationship.

In response, Twitter users have been shedding light on the complexity of abusive relationships by sharing their personal stories with the hashtags #WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft.
