Flight MH17 black boxes recovered, will be handed over to aviation officials

A separatist leader said the rebels had recovered what they presumed were the black boxes from the downed Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 in the eastern city of Donetsk.

Alexander Borodai said the devices would be handed over to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to confirm they were indeed the plane’s flight recorders.

“I can tell you that as of today, we have found some technical details of this plane, which we suppose can be those black boxes, the so-called black boxes,” Borodai, prime minister of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, said at a news conference on Sunday.

“These objects have been delivered to the city of Donetsk and are under my control.”

Another rebel official, Sergei Kavtaradze, said he thought there were two of the presumed black boxes.

Borodai also said the bodies recovered from the crash site in eastern Ukraine would remain in refrigerated containers at a train station in the town of Torez until the arrival of an international aviation delegation.

The plane was shot down Thursday over disputed territory, killing 298 passengers and crew.
