Police canvass Lawrence Heights building for clues into teacher’s murder

Police from 31 Division canvassed the Lawrence Heights neighbourhood where Abshir Hassan was gunned down earlier this month.

Hassan was one of three people shot outside an apartment building at 11 Flemington Rd., near Lawrence Avenue West and Allen Road, in the early hours of July 8.

Police said Hassan was attending a friend’s birthday party and had gone outside to move his vehicle when he was shot multiple times.

The 31-year-old substitute teacher died of his injuries.

A 22-year-old man and 18-year-old woman were shot multiple times and suffered life-threatening injuries.

Police said security video obtained shows what is believed to be a silver sedan leaving the area at the time of the shooting.

Officers went door-to-door in the building seeking witnesses and handing out pamphlets.

Police are also asking anyone with personal security camera footage north and east of Flemington Road from the night of the shooting to review it.

Chief Bill Blair told CityNews the community is cooperating with the investigation.

“There’s an overwhelming community concern,” Blair said of the shooting.

Police have also released a video appealing for information.
