TDSB teacher charged with sexual exploitation

A long-time Toronto District School Board teacher has been charged after police allege he was involved in a sexual relationship with a student under the age of 18.

Matthew Elms, 39, of Toronto, is facing a single charge of sexual exploitation after he was arrested on Friday.

He’s a teacher at Bendale Business and Technical Institute at 1555 Midland Ave. and has worked for the school board since 2000.

He also taught at Martingrove Collegiate Institute at 50 Winterton Dr.

Police believe there may be more victims.

Elms was released on bail and will be back in court next Friday.

His bail conditions include not being in a position of trust or authority to anyone under 18.

The principal at Bendale Business and Technical Institute, Wendy Blain, issued a letter to parents acknowledging the arrest. She said school staff is co-operating with police, and added that Elm was suspended.

“The safety of our students is a top priority,” she wrote.

A meeting with parents has been scheduled for Thursday at the school.
