1 dead after carbon monoxide poisoning in Scarborough

One person is dead and three others are in hospital after a carbon monoxide poisoning in Scarborough, Toronto EMS confirms.

The incident happened at a high-rise at 15 Torrance Rd., in the Eglinton Avenue East and McCowan Road area.

Police say the man was power washing the underground garage at the time of the incident. It’s believed the men had been working in the garage for about eight hours.

“A crew was using several gas-powered power washers in the underground,” said Platoon chief John Thompson. “There [were] fans involved but the exhaust fans in the building were not serviceable.”

Thompson said when emergency crews arrived on scene they found a woman performing CPR on the man.

Paramedics said the three others suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The first six floors of the building and some of the surrounding   areas were evacuated after elevated levels of CO2 were detected.

Crews used positive pressure ventilation to clear the atmosphere within the building and create  a more habitable breathing environment.

Residents have since been allowed back in the building.
