Peel police defend Tasering man in busy Brampton street

Peel police used a Taser stun gun on a man during a confrontation Friday afternoon and the incident was captured by a witness and uploaded to YouTube.

Police responded to a call about a man darting in and out of traffic in the Queen and Main street area of Brampton around 1 p.m.

The video of the incident was taken by Ray Bradshaw and posted to YouTube on Saturday. It shows police speaking to a distraught man sitting on a sidewalk. The man then bolts and police give chase. Four officers surround the man and discharge a Taser.

Police say the stun gun was used “at least once.”

Peel police say they acted appropriately in their attempts to apprehend the man whose name hasn’t been disclosed.

He was sent to hospital, where he remained Tuesday, for evaluation under the province’s Mental Health Act, according to police.

Despite protests heard in the video from people on the scene about a perceived excessive use of force, police say they have not received any formal complaints.
