Oshawa woman charged in Kensington hit-and-run

An Oshawa woman has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run in the Kensington Market area that left a Toronto man fighting for his life.

Jay McGinn, 28, was getting into a cab just before 3 a.m. Saturday on Dundas Street West and Augusta Avenue, west of Spadina, when he was hit by another car. The other vehicle then fled the scene.

He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Police say Sunday evening Karen Fyfe, 31, was arrested and charged with fail to stop causing bodily harm.

Her arrest came just hours after McGinn’s mother Lisa Falls made an impassioned plea outside St. Michael’s hospital for the driver to turn themselves in.

“You have to do the right thing in this life,” she said. “We’re asking the individual who was driving the car that hit my son to please come forward.”

Falls, who described her son as a wonderful, sensitive and caring person, spent Mother’s Day at his hospital bedside.

“My son is in a deep coma. He’s on life support,” said Falls. “It’s very, very difficult right now to see him in this condition.”

Friends of the McGinn’s also took to social media to help search for the driver and the car using the hashtag #justiceforjay.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
