Winter weather to return on Tuesday

With spring now well over three weeks old, the snow tires are off, the yard work has begun, and the boots and parkas are already at the back of the closet

However, winter weather is expected to make a comeback on Tuesday, as much of the province will see a major swing in temperatures and a mixed bag of precipitation.

Temperatures are expected to plummet from a high of 21 C on Monday to a low of -7 C on Tuesday night, with the potential for freezing rain and snow.

Ahead of winter’s reappearance, it will be a warm day for parts of southern Ontario on Monday as temperatures may reach the mid-twenties mark.

On Monday, 680News meteorologist Jill Taylor said there will be some early morning fog with a gusty wind and showers. There’s a high of 21 C with a low near 0 C.

“[There’s] even the possibility of some thundershowers. We’ll climb to 21 C … and then a big change for tomorrow,” Taylor said.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for much of southern Ontario, including Toronto and the GTA, on Monday morning warning of snow changing to snow on Monday night with a risk of freezing rain.

The weather agency said a low pressure system will bring winter-like weather to most of parts of the region.

Taylor said it be a lot cooler on Tuesday with the potential for around two centimetres of snow. Higher snowfall accumulation is possible for Newmarket and Barrie. The forecast calls for a high of 1 C with a low near -7 C. There’s also a chance of freezing rain Monday overnight.

The snow is expected to taper off later on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Environment Canada has issued a rainfall warning for Parry Sound, Algonquin and the Grey-Bruce Peninsula, with up to 50 millimetres of rain in the forecast for Monday.

The Credit Valley Conservation Authority has issued a flood warning.
