Tegan and Sara won three Juno awards at Sunday night’s Winnipeg ceremony, taking home trophies for single of the year for Closer as well as best group and best pop album.
Serena Ryder and Arcade Fire each won two awards, with Ryder winning artist and songwriter of the year and Arcade Fire claiming best album and best alternative album.
Justin Bieber, who did not attend, won his fourth straight Juno Fan Choice award but the award was booed by the crowd.
Tegan and Sara as well as Ryder all came to Bieber’s defence, saying he was a talented musician and that booing him was tacky.
“I thought it was tacky to boo. I think it’s tacky when people boo at hockey games, I think it’s tacky to boo artists,” Tegan Quin said.
“It’s not Canadian,” Sara Quin interjected.
“It’s not very Canadian. We were backstage when it happened and it made me feel sad,” Quin said.
A Tribe Called Red was named breakthrough group of the year.
