Dog trainer receives suspended sentence in animal cruelty case

An Oshawa dog trainer has received a one-year suspended sentence in an animal cruelty case.

Craig Wright, 44, who has already spend 65 days in jail, was also sentenced to time served on Thursday.

Wright was the owner of the FACW K9 facility on Waterloo Road. Pet owners who had placed their dogs in Wright’s care had alleged Wright had abused their dogs, with two owners claiming their dogs had died while in his care.

The facility was raided in May 2011 and Wright was arrested and charged with 17 counts of animal cruelty and neglect.

He was convicted on Jan. 17 of five counts of animal cruelty and one count of neglect.

The prosecution was pushing for five years in jail and a $10,000 fine for each of the convictions.
