GO Transit announces more weekend trips, extended Barrie service

GO Transit announced Wednesday that more trips were coming to three of its lines, including extended service to Barrie.

“We want to expand our GO service within constrained budgets,” Minister of Transportation Minister Glen Murray said at Union Station.

The Ontario government is “going back to the core basic building blocks of The Big Move … the number-one priority in the Big Move is GO Transit,” he said.

As of April 5, GO Transit is adding 36 new weekday and 31 new weekend bus trips on the Highway 407 West route, 24 new weekend bus trips on the Stouffville route, and extending one of the morning and afternoon trains on the Barrie line from 10 cars to 12 cars, adding 320 more seats per trip.

“The Barrie story, this is an early win,” Murray said, praising Mayor Jeff Lehmen for increasing local transportation in the city.

“Barrie has now increased its transit service by 30 per cent and made our GO service in Barrie a transit hub for the city.”

There are other changes coming to GO Transit, Murray said.

Starting June 28, there will be two new weekday morning trains on the Barrie line from Maple to Union Station. There will also be more weekend trips on the Lakeshore lines.

This spring, GO Transit will also begin construction on the Square One Bus Terminal station in Mississauga and will introduce new electric vehicle charging stations at Burlington, Clarkson, Erindale, Pickering and Ajax GO train stations.

Earlier this year, Murray said the Ontario government would be spending $5 million to improve the Etobicoke North GO transit station.

The changes include extending the platform, heated shelters and bus loop improvements. More lighting, an improved drop-off area and 10 more accessible parking spaces are also planned for the station.
