Treacherous road conditions cause Hwy. 401 closures

Icy road conditions triggered several crashes in the GTA on Thursday morning, including several along a stretch of Highway 401 from Mavis Drive west to Milton.

The first collision happened in the eastbound lanes at Highway 407, just west of Winston Churchill Boulevard, around 4 a.m.

A tractor-trailer ended up in the ditch. Another tractor-trailer jackknifed at Winston Churchill.

The westbound lanes of the 401 were closed at Winston Churchill, but have since reopened.

There are also numerous collisions along the Highway 410 in Brampton.

In Toronto, the ramp from westbound Lawrence Avenue to the northbound Don Valley Parkway was closed following a vehicle rollover.

No injuries have been reported in the crashes.

Ontario provincial police are advising drivers to be very careful and slow down. The ice is nearly impossible to spot, and in these bitterly cold conditions road salt loses its effectiveness in melting the ice.
