Woman dead in Markham crash

The snowy weather played a role in a three-vehicle crash which caused the death of a 61-year-old Markham woman on Wednesday, police say.

York Regional Police said the collision happened around 11 a.m., when a vehicle spun out on 14th Avenue, just west of Ninth Line, and hit another vehicle.

Const. Andy Pattenden said one of the drivers, the Markham woman, had no vital signs and was pronounced dead in hospital.

“It is a time for us to remind everybody that yesterday was nice and warm — driving conditions were great,” Pattenden said. “They’ve deteriorated drastically today. The roads are slippery.”

The road was covered in snow at the time of the crash.

The collision investigations unit is at the scene, and police said 14th Avenue would be closed for several hours.
