U.S. skier Gus Kenworthy trying to save Sochi dogs

Medals aren’t the only thing that athletes are trying to bring home from the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics. One athlete is focused on rescuing stray puppies as well.

U.S. freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy won a silver medal in the slopestyle event at Sochi and is trying to bring a group of dogs home with him to Colorado.

“There’s four puppies and a mom, and I’m trying to bring them all back if I can. Figuring out if they’re going to have to be quarantined and transported — that’s the process right now. I sort of vowed that I wasn’t going leave without them,” Kenworthy told KiSS 92.5’s Roz and Mocha Show.

A friend of 680News reporter Jaime Pulfer is also at the Winter Olympics and has bonded with a Jack Russell puppy that she’s named Sochi Jr.

Animal activists in Sochi — disturbed by reports that the host city has contracted the killing of thousands of stray dogs before and during the Olympic Games — have been picking up dogs from the streets and putting them up at their homes or in temporary shelters.
