Man burned in explosion at Scarborough chemical plant

One man is in hospital after a chemical explosion in Scarborough early Sunday morning.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. at Digital Specialty Chemicals on Coronation Drive, near Morningside and Lawrence avenues.

Toronto Fire Services Capt. David Eckerman said there were eight people in the building at the time and they found one man covered in a chemical believed to be cyclopentadiene — a derivative of coal tar used to make insecticides and plastic.

“When we arrived one employee was covered in a black substance,” Eckerman said. “We decontaminated this person in a mobile shower.”

The man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital with burns to his legs.

Police said there’s no danger to people in the surrounding area.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.
