Father charged after child left in parked car

York Regional police have charged a 39-year-old Toronto man with child abandonment after he allegedly left his two-year-old daughter in a parked car for over half-an-hour in sub-zero temperatures in Markham on Tuesday night.

A concerned citizen called police after spotting the child alone in the unheated vehicle in a Costco parking lot at 14th Avenue and Markham Road around 7 p.m.

The child was sleeping when police arrived and didn’t respond to knocks on the window.

Emergency crews rescued the toddler, who was unharmed.

Police say she was dressed appropriately, but had been left in the car for 40 minutes, and the father was arrested and charged a short time later.

The accused, who has not been named, was released and will return to court on Feb. 26 in Newmarket.

Children’s Aid has been called in to investigate and police are reminding people to never leave children or pets unattended during extreme weather conditions.
