Loblaws coming to Kensington Market: reports

Grocery giant Loblaws will soon be coming to Kensington Market, according to multiple published reports.

The 20,000-foot store will open in a new condo that’s being built at 297 College St., just west of Spadina Avenue.

That’s much smaller than an average Loblaws store, a company spokesman told Global News.

The Globe and Mail reports that smaller grocers in the neighbourhood are concerned about competition, but there is little they can do to fight back along zoning lines.

While plans for a new Wal-Mart in the area have stalled, existing zoning laws allow for a grocery store in the condo tower.

The store and the condo are set to open in 2016.
