London police officer charged with dangerous driving: SIU

A London police officer has been charged with dangerous driving after a crash involving a cruiser, another vehicle and two pedestrians, Ontario’s police watchdog says.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Monday that the collision occurred on Oct. 6, 2013, and that there were “reasonable grounds” to believe the officer committed an offence. But the SIU declined further comment saying that the case was now before the court.

The officer was heading south on Adelaide Street around 11 a.m. when the cruiser collided with an eastbound vehicle.

The other vehicle then hit two pedestrians.

Const. Leah Constance Laari is facing one charge of dangerous driving. She will appear in court on Feb. 27.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
